How to Find Your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs

Finding your Big 3 takes about a minute once you have your birth details. This guide explains what information you need, why each piece matters, and how to use the free Big 3 Calculator.

    The three details you need

To calculate your full Big 3, you need:

    • Your birth date: this sets your Sun sign and narrows down your Moon sign.
    • Your birth time: this is needed for your Rising sign and helps confirm your Moon sign.
    • Your birth location: the city or town where you were born.

    Why your birth date matters

Your Sun sign comes from your birth date. The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so most people can find their Sun sign from the date alone.

If you were born near the day the Sun changes signs, your birth time and location help confirm which sign it was in.

    Why your birth time matters

The Moon changes signs about every two and a half days, and the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours. That means time of day can change your Moon sign and almost always shapes your Rising sign.

If you can, check your birth certificate or hospital records, or ask a family member. An exact time is best, but a close estimate is still helpful.

    Why your birth location matters

Your Rising sign depends on what was on the eastern horizon where you were born. The same moment looks different from different places on Earth, so location changes the result.

Location also tells the calculator which time zone applied at your birth, so your birth time can be read correctly.

How to use the Big 3 Calculator

The calculator is free and does not require an account.

    • Go to the birth details page.
    • Enter your birth date.
    • Enter your birth time, or leave it blank if you do not know it.
    • Start typing your birth city and choose it from the list.
    • Submit to see your chart, your Big 3 placements, and your personalized introduction.

If you do not know your birth time

You can still use the calculator. Without a birth time, it creates a Big Two reading based on your Sun and Moon signs. Your Rising sign needs a birth time to be accurate, so it is left out rather than guessed.
